Case Study: Designing an AI-Based Chat Tool to Measure What Matters

MOVING THE NEEDLE ON YOUTH EMPLOYMENT
In Dundee, KwaZulu-Natal, a rural area facing over 60% youth unemployment, traditional career initiatives focus strictly on superficial metrics like certificates issued or bodies in seats. To change this, I architected a scalable, AI-based chat tool designed to measure what actually moves the needle: building the character strengths, resilience, and career confidence required to achieve long-term, sustainable livelihoods.

THE INVISIBLE METRICS OF SUCCESS
While the Dundee Digital Skills Hub successfully opened pathways into the digital economy, standard evaluation methods completely overlooked the deeper dimensions of human growth, such as resilience, confidence, and community-level well-being. Without credible evidence of these "invisible" shifts, the strategic case for scaling the initiative remained incomplete for funders and partners.

MIXED-METHODS ETHNOGRAPHY & TOOL DESIGN
I led the impact measurement architecture, designing a mixed-methods framework capable of capturing both the visible economic data and the invisible aspects of youth development.

Behavioural Tool Development: Created frameworks to measure core character traits that dictate true work readiness, including grit, curiosity, self-control, and generative drive.

Human-Centred Fieldwork: Deployed a blend of chat-based interaction, ethnographic interviews, reflection workbooks, and targeted quantitative surveys.

Holistic Health Tracking: Embedded dimensions of mental health and personal well-being directly into the employment program metrics.

Data Synthesis: Translated complex qualitative and quantitative data into clear, evidence-based narratives for the Hub's leadership and corporate funders.

CREDIBLE EVIDENCE FOR SCALED GROWTH
The data proved a critical strategic insight: social-emotional outcomes are not just "nice-to-haves", they are foundational drivers of employability and long-term career resilience.

For the Participants: Demonstrated measurable, holistic growth in personal agency, mental well-being, and technical confidence, directly uplifting family and community dynamics.

For the Business & Partners: Delivered a rigorous, credible evidence framework that provided corporate funders and clients with the confidence needed to scale the project.

For the Ecosystem: Proven blueprint showing that rural youth can thrive in high-skill digital careers when the intervention intentionally supports both technical capability and human well-being.
